This painting came together on a perfect Indian Summer afternoon spent with my ailing father and our youngest son. My son kept his grandfather entertained and busy as he sat in a folding chair watching me paint. The painting captures the warmth of the day, the enchantment of the gentled river and the soft play of light.

Oh the Salmon River! Below the end of the road about 5 miles, Horse Creek enters the river, depositing a large gravel bar and slowing the river just enough to offer a quiet reflective view of a wonderously busy river, carving its way across Idaho's midsection. The "River of No Return"- for me is the river of "no letting go", this river has hold upon me like no other, sculpting me spiritually and physically. this scene is one of springtime, towards sundown; last winter's ice still lies on the north facing sand bars, and its frozen form matches the seasons delicate balance of light and darkness, warmth and chill: released as slowly as it was formed.This 16 X 20 oil painting portrays a moment of calm as evening descends into the canyon, contrasting still water on a restless river, a passing of sunlight from direct to diffused and day giving way to dusk

12 x 16 Acrylic Plein Aire painting was painted in September, a perfect time to find vibrant color and soft light. While accompanying our oldest son Micah on an archery hunt, I brought my paints and found the afternoon light perfect - Since I had to work fast I was delighted with the way the acrylic paint allowed me to capture this exquisite moment as summer gives way to the fall: as mid day gives way to evening. I too have archery hunted in my past but now I bring home a gentler harvest.

16X20 oil, Canyon Lake is located in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness
Back in the Late 70's I was hunting elk with some friends in the upper selway river drainage west of Darby, Montana.When I came upon canyon lake, elk hunting I photographed the lake in the midday haze caused by a nearby forest fire on Vance mountain. I returned to this exact location in 2008 and found that the four trees on the left were standing skeletons, and young trees were beginning their upright duty of "watchmen of the lake" still as pristine as that day in September of 1979

Steve Spencer, an Idaho native, is a self-taught wildlife, landscape and portrait artist. His paintings are the fruit of rigorous contact with the source, the hours he spends in front of an easel are preceded by weeks in the mountains and canyons of the west. The landscapes are places he has walked and is familiar with. Steve's work is an articulate expression of his love for the 'delicate weave of extremes' that is the West. He finds individual purpose and challenge in his creations, allowing his works to 'speak for themselves'.

Throughout Steve's 40 years as a professional artist he only offered his work as originals. Just recently he has made the decision to allow many of his former works to be printed and distributed by fineart america. In the future look for many more pieces of fine art by Steve Spencer.
